Lake Berryessa for All

By Paul Schramski (02/01/2004)

The conservation vision for Lake Berryessa calls for hiking, picnicking, swimming, bird watching, kayaking, the enjoyment of peace and quiet, and places to camp or stay in a cabin. Lake Berryessa should be a special place-- not a privatized trailer park with little room for family access, or peace of mind. We are asking for parity for nature recreation.

But, the battle over access to Lake Berryessa continues. On January 21, 2004, three individuals spoke out about the need to open Lake Berryessa up to the public at a Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) hearing. An audience of approximately one hundred special interest trailer and mobile home owners, jet skiers and motor boat operators, countered with signs bearing the symbol “A+”. These trailer owners were demanding the acceptance of Alternative A maintenance of the status quo.

We need to work harder to let the BOR know that we too enjoy Lake Berryessa, we have a vision to open the lake to the public, and we support change! (The nesting bald eagles on Big Island agree with us!)

In October 2003, the BOR released the “Future Use and Operations of Lake Berryessa” Draft Environmental Impact Statement with four proposed alternatives. Alternatives B, C, and D offer a chance to open Lake Berryessa to public trails, federal land management, and provide safety for families and protection of habitat with slower speed limits for motor boats. The BOR endorses Alternative B as the preferred alternative.

Alternative B is a step in the right direction, but fails to fully provide appropriate public management of public lands. Alternative D offers the best chance to open campgrounds to the public and protect the lake for enjoyment by future generations.

Let the Bureau of Reclamation know that you also use and enjoy the beauty of Lake Berryessa. The Bureau of Reclamation needs to hear that Lake Berryessa is a public resource.

Please, write to the BOR with your support for Alternative D before April 22:
