Brisk Morning Walk (1A).  Davis

Brisk 4-mile loop via Davis greenbelts/bike paths. May include Davis ponds, UC Davis campus, or arboretum. Meet 8 a.m. at Peet’s Coffee in Market Place Shopping Center, corner of Sycamore Lane & West Covell Blvd. (from Hwy. 113, exit east on West Covell Blvd.). Not limited to singles. Leader: M. C. October 3, Saturday

Day Hike (3C).  Picketts and Hawkins Peak 10,089'

We will start from Hope Valley and head south. Hike about 11 miles round trip and at least 3,000' of gain. We will learn about the local geography and can discuss local environmental impacts. Limited to 8. Bring the 10 essentials and a snow shovel is required. Please do not contact me after 7 p.m. the day before. No dogs. Must be in great shape. Younger Adult Full Moon Hike (1A).  Sierra Foothills

We’ll meet at Streets of London Pub in Folsom, have an optional drink and/or dinner and then head to the Auburn State Recreation Area where we’ll do a moderately strenuous 5 total mile stroll along the Olmstead Trail under a romantic full moon! We will learn about how this area became a Recreation Area. Bring water, jacket, flashlight, sturdy shoes and money for optional drink/dinner and carpooling. Rain or cloudy skies cancels. No dogs. For ages 18-40s, but all are welcome. Meet 6:30 p.m. @ Streets of London Pub, 649 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, but no later than 8 p.m. We’ll leave the pub to do the hike at 8:30 p.m. and return to the pub by 1 a.m. Contact leader before October 3 to confirm attendance and for additional details. Day Hike (2A).  Fish Hatchery and American River Bluffs

We'll hike from the hatchery at Nimbus Dam across the river and hike up the bluffs, 200' gain, overlooking the American River. Then hike down along Lake Natoma and back to the Fish Hatchery for a 6 mile round trip. End with tour of Fish Hatchery and fish ladder to see how the salmon are doing this year and how their decline will impact the American River ecosystem. Optional lunch at nearby restaurant. Day Hike (3C).  Grouse Ridge to Fall Creek Mountain and Five Lakes Basin - ADDED

Off I-80 and Bowman Road at Hwy.20. Beautiful wilderness area with many lakes (one every 1/2 mile). About 15 total miles and about 2,500' total elev. gain. Must be in excellent shape! Day Hike (2A).  Robie Point Trail – Auburn Recreational Area

Hike is 7 miles with 600’ elevation gain. Have lunch at a beach on the river. View what would have been the Auburn Dam and learn why it was not built. Bring layered clothing, lunch, water and $$ for your driver. Meet 10:30 a.m. @ the Roseville Park and Ride off of Eureka Road. River Paddle (Class 1).  Cosumnes River Preserve

Leisure paddle in the Preserve on the Cosumnes and Mokelumne Rivers, and related sloughs. We can learn about how this area became a preserve. Enjoy the fall colors, and learn about conservation issues in the Delta. We may see river otter, beaver, turtles, and large waterbirds. Should have own boat, paddle, and vest. Younger Adult Day Hike (1A).  Sierra Fall Colors Hike

Moderately strenuous 5 mile round trip hike which starts at Luther Pass and follows a closed dirt road downhill through a forest of colorful aspens to Hope Valley. 650’ elev. gain. Bring lunch, water, jacket (temperatures could range from the 30s to 50s), lightweight gloves, camera, sturdy shoes and money for optional carpooling and dinner. Rain, snow or adverse road conditions cancels. No dogs. Contact leader before October 10 to confirm attendance. For ages 18-40s, but all are welcome. Day Hike (2B).  Georgetown Area

Fleet Week Urban Hike (2A).  San Francisco

We’ll drive to Vallejo and take the 10 a.m. Baylink ferry ($24 roundtrip, senior discount for 65+) into San Francisco for an urban hike. We will visit the Embarcadero, Telegraph Hill, Fisherman’s Wharf, and on to Marina Green. We will see and learn about the naval fleet and the Blue Angels. Bring lunch or get one at a Deli on the way. Day Hike (2B).  Lake Tahoe - Rubicon Trail - UPDATED

Join us for a beautiful hike around the shores of Lake Tahoe. We will start at the Emerald Bay Overlook and hike to D.L. Bliss State Park where we'll have lunch on the beach. The hike is 9 miles with 1,100' elev. gain. Bring lunch, water (2 quarts), and money for your driver and optional dinner. Day Hike (2A).  Hidden Falls Regional Park

Plan to hike the Seven Pools Vista Trail and Hidden Falls Trail. The Park is located between Auburn and Lincoln. Outstanding natural features at Hidden Falls include Coon Creek and Deadman Creek, groves of blue oak woodlands and a year-round waterfall, 20-30 feet high. Hidden Falls Regional Park, formerly known as Didion Ranch, was recently acquired under the Placer Legacy Open Space and Agricultural Conservation Program. Learn about how California Counties are building parks and keeping open green space. Approx. 8 miles round trip with a 700' elev. gain. This is a moderately-difficult hike. This is an honorary Barb Miller hike with chocolate for all, and most likely pizza afterwards (no choice, sorry). Heavy Rain cancels. Not limited to Singles. Dogs on leash OK. Day Hike (2A).  Marin Bike Trail to Sam Taylor State Park

A nice bike trail along Lagonitas Creek through a redwood forest into the park for lunch. Learn about the area’s trees and wildlife. 8 miles and no elevation gain. Includes a quick stop at the Marin French Cheese Factory on the way to the trailhead. Davis stop on request. Bring lunch, water and $$ for your driver. Meet at 10 a.m. at 11th and P sts. Day Hike (2B).  Island Lake in Desolation Wilderness

Hike is 7 miles with 1200' elevation gain. Start out in lush forest near Wrights Lake and ascend into open granite areas at Twin Lakes and our destination, Island Lake at 8,100'. Shade is limited for much of the hike. Optional dinner afterward. Hike is advertised for ages 18-40s, but all are welcome. Limited to 12. Chance of rain cancels. Bike Ride (4A).  Sacramento River

Ride along the river up from Garcia Bend Park to Old Sacramento, mostly on the levy trail. Learn about levy access legal issues for hikers and riders. The round trip is about 18-20 miles. Hike fast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.. 8+ miles on flat trail past farmland and Raptor habitat; with possible sightings of Red-tailed, Swainson's, and Sharp-shinned Hawks; Turkey Vultures; Burrowing Owls; Wild Turkeys; Egrets; and Herons. Day Hike (2B).  Smith Lake (Desolation Wilderness)

This is a moderately-strenuous hike on a high alpine trail from Wrights Lake up to Smith Lake, with stops at Grouse and Hemlock Lakes. Hike stats: 6.5 miles (round trip), elevation gain 1,700', starting elevation 6,900'. We’ll check out the outstanding scenery and the late season wildflowers. This is NOT a leisurely hike! It will be moderately paced over a rocky trail with significant elevation gain. Hikers must be in good to excellent condition. Bring the essentials, including 2-3 quarts water, snacks, lunch, layered clothing due to changeable weather conditions, and $$ for carpool drivers. Hike limited to 12. No dogs. Hike rain or shine. Day Hike (2B).  Red Mountain

This is an historical hike to an old railroad lookout. The lookout was able to view 22 miles of RxR track but was abandoned after an employee in the lookout was killed by lightning in 1933. This hike has great views! 2,000' elevation gain, strenuous hike. Heavy rain cancels. Be prepared for changeable weather and bring $$ for drivers. Meet 9:00 a.m. @ 11th and P Street. Day Hike (2B).  Big Meadow Trail to Dardanelles Lake - UPDATED

Best time to see colorful quaking aspen. We’ll follow the trail steadily upslope to the Big Meadow, then continuing upslope to a ridge at about the midpoint, then generally downslope to Dardanelles Lake, stopping for lunch at lakeside, and returning the same way we came. 7 miles, moderate difficulty, moderate pace. We’ll drive back to Sacto through Carson Pass for best aspen viewing, with optional stop at Apple Hill. Meet at 7:45 at Sunrise Park-n-Ride. Contact the leader to join the outing at Placerville. Day Hike (2A).  Humbug-Willow Creek Trail

A close to home hike through the city of Folsom’s green space. 6 to 8 miles and little elevation gain. Bring water and lunch. Children welcome. Meet 10 a.m. @ the parking area between Jamba Juice and LaBou (located in Folsom on the southwest corner of Folsom Blvd. and Blue Ravine Dr.). We can learn a bit about the history of John Muir. We’ll start at Rock Springs on Mt. Tamalpais, hike down the Mt. to Muir Woods and on the way enjoy Fall in the cool, shaded forest. This is a strenuous hike of 1,700' elevation gain back up the Mt. and 8-mile round trip. Bring layered clothing for cooler weather, lunch and water. Day Hike (2B).  South Fork of the Yuba River

This is a hike along the beautiful South Fork of the Yuba River near Nevada City. The trip is 9 miles round-trip with a 1,200' elevation gain. It is fairly strenuous. We hike into the Primitive Campground and have lunch by the river. Bring 2 qts. of water. Along the way we can see the historic mining operations which used Monitors (water cannons) to find gold. Hike starts at 7,890' elevation. Looking for the last of any fall color that may be in the Sierras, hike to an Alpine Lake with under 500' of elevation gain! Gently undulating trail takes us to granite shoreline of this hidden treasure where we will eat lunch. This hike will be at a leisurely pace. Bring 10 essentials and plan for changeable weather. Bike Ride (2B).  Foresthill Divide Loop

This is a mountain bike ride that follows a single-track dirt trail along the Foresthill Divide east of Auburn. The ride will be moderately-paced and will cover 11 miles round trip, with a total elevation gain of around 1,000' (counting the ups and downs). This is a fun trail that doesn’t do a lot of climbing. Day Hike (2A).  American River Confluence (near Auburn) to Lake Clementine

Approximately 800' elevation and 6 miles. This hike starts at the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the American River and follows the North Fork upstream to Lake Clementine. Nice views of the river and a mix of open and forested land. Not limited to singles. It is only ˝-hour drive from Roseville. Optional dinner in Roseville afterward. More than a light rain cancels. Day Hike (1A).  Nevada City

This easy to moderate, 4-mile loop, up and down the hilly streets of this charming Gold Rush town (ele. gain not over 1,000') offers fall colors, a winery, historic buildings, and a lovely lunch spot in a local park. Please bring: food, water, rain gear, sun protection, $$, etc. Est. return time is 5 p.m. Rain cancels. Meet 9 a.m. @ Roseville Park & Ride (Eureka/Atlantic Rd. exit off I-80).
