Day Hike (2A). American River Bike Trail

Hike the tail end of the bike trail and through old town Folsom. 8 miles and 300’ elevation gain. Learn about and view old Town Folsom and see old “hands on” exhibits in old town. Meet at 10 a.m. (your body will think it is 11 a.m.) at the Folsom Park and Ride at the intersection of Folsom Blvd. and Iron Point Rd. (below Chili’s Bar and Grill). Leader keeps very slow pace. Day Hike (2B). Fleming Meadow

We will hike 8 to 10 miles & 1200' elev. gain, in a mining area near Jenkinson Lake. We will explore a couple of mine tunnels, so bring a flashlight. We will hike down to a beautiful creek and boulder scramble along the creek to another trail to make a loop. Suggest long pants due to some berry bushes. Brisk Morning Walk (1A) Davis

Brisk 4-mile loop via Davis greenbelts/bike paths. May include Davis ponds, UC Davis campus, or arboretum. Meet 8 a.m. at Peet’s Coffee (1A) Market Place Shopping Center, corner of Sycamore Lane & West Covell Blvd. (from Hwy. 113, exit east on West Covell Blvd. Not limited to singles. Leader: M. C. River Paddle (1A).  Delta Meadows Preserve

Leisure paddle on Snodgrass Slough in the Delta, near Walnut Grove.  Enjoy the fall colors, and learn about conservation issues in the Delta.  We may see river otters, water birds, and beaver.  You should have your own boat, paddle, and vest.  Bring lunch, water, repellent, block out, etc. Forecast of rain cancels.  Call for reservation by Nov. 3.  Leader: Stan Jones, 916. 393.5373, or geezenski2@sbcglobal.net.

November 5-8, Thursday-Sunday

Mojave National Preserve Service Trip

We will visit the California desert when temperatures are cooler and clean up a large illegal dump area on National Park Service land that has built up over the years. We will be joined by staff from the Mojave National Preserve for National Public Lands Day. A hike is planned for Friday for those arriving in the morning. We will work all day Saturday and until noon on Sunday. We will hear a ranger talk about the Preserve on Friday evening. Camping will be rustic, but a portable restroom will be provided. We'll be treated to a barbecue by the Preserve staff on Saturday evening. A high clearance vehicle is recommended to access the site, but we can shuttle people and gear if needed. Free Winter Skills Class

The El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol (EDNSP) is sponsoring a free all day winter skills class in Placerville. Subjects covered will include Avalanche Awareness, Hypothermia, Weather, Packs and Equipment, Group Dynamics, Nutrition, Clothing, and Emergency Shelters. The class is held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Forest Service office. Seating is limited so call early and reserve a seat. Contact the EDNSP at 530.647.1825. Younger Adults Day Hike (1B). Western States Trail to El Dorado Canyon

Moderately strenuous 5.6 total mile hike which starts at the historic gold rush town of Michigan Bluff and follows the Western States Trail to El Dorado Canyon near the Middle Fork of the American River. The oak trees should provide some nice fall color. 1,600’ elev. gain. Bring lunch, water, jacket, hiking boots and money for optional carpooling. Rain, snow or adverse road conditions cancels. No dogs. No reservation needed. For ages 18-40s, but all are welcome. Meet 9 a.m. @ Horseshoe Bar Rd. Day Hike (1A). Lakeview Connector Trail

This is the newest (2003) trail in the area. We can learn how it came to be. The trail follows a ridgeline above Lake Clementine, with occasional glimpses of the lake. The trail is a series of ups and downs with one long descent/climb as it drops down to a bridge across a stream. Hike is 6 miles with 400’ elevation gain. Learn about sharing the trail with mountain bikers. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Roseville Park and Ride off of Eureka Road. Bring lunch, water and $$ for your driver as well as layered clothing. Day Hike (2A).   Lake Natoma from Folsom Outlets to Downtown, Historic Folsom

Plan to hike 8 miles roundtrip from Folsom Outlets to Historic Downtown Folsom.   Learn about the historic significance of the area (gold mining) and current environmental issues.  Much of the hike is in beautiful riparian habitat on well maintained, off bike path trails.  We plan to eat lunch in a downtown Folsom restaurant.  Heavy rain cancels.  Not limited to Singles. Dogs on leash OK. This is an easy hike but will be done at a fast pace. We will climb an astounding 300’. November 14, Saturday

Day Hike (5D). Point Reyes

This trip will start from Bear Valley, up Mt Wittenberg, down to Coast Camp, over to Wildcat Camp, up Fir Top, down into Five Brooks and back to Bear Valley. We will learn about the local geography and can discuss local environmental impacts. This hike will be about 22 miles and at least 4,000 feet of gain, and it is very strenuous. The hike is limited to 8. Bring the 10 essentials, 3 quarts water, lunch, and snacks. Note: There are both poison oak and stinging nettles in the area. Day Hike (1B). Lover’s Leap

This is a historical hike along the old Pony Express/Stage Coach Tool Road with interesting informational signs along the trail.  Heavy rains cancel, 5 miles, 1100’ gain, moderate hike, $ for drivers. Meet at 9:00 at 11th and P Street.  Leader: Kathy 916.451.3358. *

Day Hike (2B). Canyon Creek (ASRA)

This hike follows a mostly level trail along the heavily forested south side of the American River canyon, with a few steep parts. Hike stats: 9 miles (round trip), elevation gain 1000', starting elevation 1800’. This will be a moderately paced hike, so hikers must be in good condition. Bring the essentials, including 2-3 quarts water, snacks, lunch, sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing due to changeable weather conditions and $$ for carpool drivers.  Hike limited to 15.  No dogs. Day Hike (2A). Sacramento downtown urban hike

Let’s leave our cars home today and ride the bus or light rail into town for a brisk 6-mile urban hike. Check www.sacrt.com to learn how. Reduce your carbon footprint and learn about historic architecture, the riverfront improvements and the new pedestrian walkway on the Tower Bridge over to West Sacramento. We’ll also walk to Discovery Park and make a loop back through the downtown, seeing some interesting public art along the way. Bring lunch and 1 qt. water. If the weather is bad, bring an umbrella and money to eat lunch in a restaurant. Not limited to singles. Day Hike (1B). Marin Headlands – Gerbode Valley

Come take a 6 mile, 1,100’ elevation gain hike. Learn about the abundant wildflowers in the area. Great views of San Francisco and Pacific Ocean. Day Hike (3C). Mt Tam to Stinson Beach

This strenuous, but spectacular hike, starts out on coastal hills, then descends to Stinson Beach and returns along scenic Steep Ravine trail. Along the way we will hike through woodsy areas of ferns, bays and Douglas fir. Open hillsides will provide a great view of Stinson Beach and Bolinas Mesa. Stinson Beach has full facilities: beach, swimming, water, food and rest rooms. After lunch at the beach we will hike up Steep Ravine trail. This is a magnificent area offering an inspiring setting of redwoods, ferns, mosses, creeks and waterfalls. We can discuss the wonderful variety of plant life. The distance is about 10 miles with a 2,000' elev. gain. This is a strenuous hike and I walk at a brisk pace, therefore the hike is more suitable for those who work out on a regular basis. Day Hike (1A). CSUS and River Park

This moderately paced urban hike provides a tour of the state college campus and the neighborhood known for its trees and individualized styling of homes. The 5-mile loop features an arboretum, a bridge over the American River, a climb up the six storied garage for views (est. 150' ele. gain), over 50 varieties of trees, and a little history. You'll need comfortable shoes, water, lunch/$ for fast food, and sun protection. Not limited to singles. Heavy/steady rain cancels. Meet 10 a.m. in Glenn Hall Park parking lot by tennis court. Directions: from Business I-80 or hwy 50, take Howe Ave exit and go to Fair Oaks Blvd. Go west on Fair Oaks and H St. Turn right on Carlson Dr. and go to the end. Bike Ride (4A). Fish Hatchery to Folsom Lake

Ride up to Beal’s Point at Folsom Lake from the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Ave. and Hwy. 50, along the American River Bike Trail, which is paved. We can discuss a bit about why the Fish Hatchery exists. This is a moderately-paced ride of 18-20 miles, with some hills (750' elev. gain). We'll have lunch or snack at Folsom Lake then ride back down the hill. Great views of Lake Natomas and Folsom Lake. There is some optional single-track dirt on the return route. Bring lunch, water, snacks, tire kit, helmet, and fully-prepared bike, etc. Rain cancels. November 21, Saturday

Easy Day Hike, 2A. Quarry Road Trail, Auburn State Recreation Area

Join us for a 6-7 mile hike along this wide, level trail on the Middle Fork of the American River. This is a good beginner’s hike. Meet at Roseville Park and Ride at 12:00. Heavy rain cancels. Optional early dinner after the hike.  Leader:  Margaret Bundy 916.849.1882 or margaretbundy@yahoo.com.

Day Hike (2A). The Maidu Trail

Hike 7 miles (Elevation gain of 600’) along the North Fork of the American River starting at Rattlesnake Bar. Beautiful views of the river with an alternation of sun and shade. This is an area that would not exist if the Auburn Dam had been built. Hike the confluence trail of the middle fork of the American River and return via Clementine Trail about the north fork. Approximately 7 miles and 870’ elevation gain. Beautiful views from both trails. Bring layered clothing, lunch, water and $$ for your driver and optional early dinner after the hike. Backpack (3B). Sykes Hot Springs

We will hike in 11.5 miles and 1800 elev.gain to a beautiful area in the Ventana Wilderness Area near Big Sur. Limited to 10 people. For more details call. Leader: Alex MacCollom 916.978.9470 (call before 9 p.m.).

November 27, Friday

Pig out walk (2A)

Meet at 10 a.m. in the parking area near the tall red sculpture to right of Roseville 24 Hour Fitness on Sunrise at Eureka. Find a bathroom on your way there as there are none on this 6 mile walk on pavement. Bring sun hat, jacket, umbrella, and water, but no snack. We will walk past 4000 square foot mansions and bemoan the lost habitat for our native species. While we walk we can salivate in anticipation of the buffet at the casino in Lincoln. The eating area is smoke free and the price is about $10 for all you can stuff in. ($8 for us mature people). We can carpool the 20 minutes to the casino. No reservations needed. Day Hike (2A). Napa River-to-Ridge Trail

Approximately 750 ft. elevation gain and 7 miles. This hike starts at the Napa River and goes to the Skyline Wilderness Park and returns, going through meadow and ending on a ridge. Great views of the Napa Valley. Not limited to singles. Note: $3.00 hiking fee for the trail. Please bring single dollar bills for the fee. More than a light rain cancels. Meet 9:30 a.m. at 11th & P. Reduce Reuse Recycle

Learn the wonders of thrift store shopping. How about name brand fleece jackets, ski pants, rain gear, work clothing, etc. for $3-$5 bucks each! Want nice soft pre-shrunk jeans? You got em! Bring your measuring tape in case you don’t want to bother trying on clothing. If it does not fit, just donate it back. We will walk within about a four mile range with a stop for lunch near Arden Mall. Meet at 10:45 AM. Park away from the stores in the Goodwill parking lot on the East side of Fulton. (1312 Fulton). Shopping center is just North of Hurley and shares a parking lot with Vic's Grocery and 24 Hour Fitness. We’ll go rain or shine (you can purchase rain gear if you need it).
