August 2013 Outings:

EVERY TUESDAY & THURSDAY

Brrrisk Morning Walk (1A).  Davis.  Meet 7:00 a.m. at Peet's Coffee in the north Davis Market Place off of Covell Blvd. & Sycamore (at Hwy 113).  Walking distance is about 4.5 miles in 90 minutes.  Return to Peet's at about 8:30 a.m.  Everyone is welcome to walk.  Rain will cancel.  We may see wild turkeys, Guinea fowl, geese, goslings, raptors, jackrabbits, coyotes, and other Davis wildlife.  Walk along greenbelts, ponds, fields, ditches, dirt paths, gardens ― and sometimes Village Homes, UCD campus or Arboretum.  For more information, contact Co-Leaders: Marilu Carter mccarter@ucdavis.edu or 530.758.3151 and Richard Crescitelli rcresci@rocketmail.com.

AUGUST 3, SATURDAY

Cancelled Day Hike (2A).  Emigrant Lake.  This moderately strenuous 9 mile hike starts from Caples Lake and climbs gradually for 850’ to an icy lake above 8,000’.  Very scenic with wildflowers and waterfall in Mokelumne Wilderness.  Limited to 12.  Bring essentials.  Please call no sooner than the weekend before the hike for reservation.  Leader: Madeliene 916.361.7176.

AUGUST 17, SATURDAY

Cancelled: Day Hike (2B).  Machado Post Pile.  Approximately 8 miles, 1,000’ elevation gain.  This post pile is older than the Devil’s Post Pile in Mammoth, very interesting place, but hard to find, some scrambling on rocks is required.  Meet 8:00 a.m. @ 11th & P Street.  Leader: Kathy 916.451.3358.

Stair & Hill Climb (2B).  San Francisco’s Castro & Noe Valley.  We will drive to BART and ride to San Francisco.  If by some reason, we have enough drivers willing to brave driving in SF, we will skip BART and park near Market Street.  Our 8 miles will be up and down stairs and hills a lot of the day (really) for about 1,000 feet of gain, all on pavement.  We will see beautiful yards of flowers that don’t stand a chance here in Sacramento weather.  We’ll walk historic stairs and view unusual architecture.  Great views, good food, and even some history of the area.  You will need CASH for your driver, bridge tolls, BART, lunch in a restaurant, candy store, bakery visits, and possible dinner on the drive home.  Be prepared to buy a snack in case we have a late lunch.  Bring water, layered clothing for San Francisco weather, sun hat, container for leftovers, etc.  Rain cancels.  No reservation necessary.  Meet 8:00 a.m. @ 11th & P Streets.  No calls before 9:00 a.m.  Leader: Barb 916.925.5862.

Update:  If BART is on strike, we will drive to Berkeley and hike there.  That hike will be somewhat exploratory. I am not certain of the route and will be consulting a map and compass a lot.  Some of you may want to meet at Mace park and ride in Davis, instead of downtown Sac.  If you do, meet each other there at 8:15 am to arrange your carpools. Remember, we pay drivers about $4 per hour per passenger plus tolls and parking.  Call my cell at 8 am when we are gathering in Sac. 916.397.6328  I will tell you if we are driving to BART in Lafayette to ride to S.F., or if we are driving to BART in Berkeley to hike there. -Barb
