GLS booth at the annual Lambda Freedom Fair

Sacramento's annual Lambda Fair always marks the kick-off for summer fun. It was great to meet old friends, and make new ones, at our information booth. Thanks to all who helped out.

 Point Reyes scenic loop hike

A small but energetic group enjoyed a wide variety of scenery on this eleven mile loop at Pt. Reyes National Seashore, including the Old Pine Trail, Sky Trail and Bear Valley Trail

From sunny ocean views for hike leader, Merry, and the group...
   ...to fog shrouded forest...

...and wildflowers, of course! Here, an example of Foxglove.

 Mystery hike... to Enchantment Pond

Somewhere in the glaciated granite country of Crystal Basin lies a little known paradise known by some as Enchantment Pond. It is with reluctance that we even mention this secret place, lest it become overrun.

Check out this panoramic composite of the falls and pond. Scroll right or enlarge window if needed.

Sherrill enjoyed a lengthy swim in the snow-melt fed waters
   Reluctant to leave.

 GLS annual Pool Party!

A large attendance made this year's pool party a lively and carefree time.

The warm weather, and the perfect balance of sun and shade in Connie and Linda's back yard, made for lots of exuberant swimmers...

...and even a Speedo or two...
   ...not to mention, pampered Pugs...
   ...and Mermaids!
Of course, a great potluck and barbecue. Thanks Connie and Linda!!

Evening walk at Cosumnes River Preserve

We're lucky to have this nearby conservation area, being preserved and returned to it's natural state. Last summer we had about 30 hikers, but after a week of record-breaking 110 degree heat, there were only 3 of us. It was actually very comfortable, and we saw some interesting wildlife in the deepening shadows and warm glow of evening.

Witnessing what much of the valley looked like before the 1840's.

Day hike to Lola Montez Lake

A gorgeous Sierra day hike to a lake named for one of the more colorful characters of Gold Rush history (ever heard the phrase "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets"?) provided scenic vistas, alpine meadows and a cooling splash.

Interesting history of Lola Montez: http://www.zpub.com/sf/history/lola.html

 Sierra Hike n' Splash !

An opportunity to bring along the kids and the doggies, for a cooling splash and beautiful scenery.
Pets and children are welcome on certain designated outings.

Ready and raring to go.

Caples Creek/Silver Fork Loop Trail in proposed Caples Creek Wilderness area

Passing through lovely Jack Schneider Meadow

Take your pick of stream crossings... walk the log, or JUMP! (Ooops...missed it by that much!)

Our lunchtime vista from the top of the ridge seperating the drainages of Caples Creek which flows from Caples Lake, and the Silver Fork American River which flows from Silver Lake.

This landscape of glaciated granite and volcanic remnants is one of two local areas (along with Meiss Meadows) included in a Barbara Boxer's CALIFORNIAWILD HERITAGE ACT for potential Wilderness designation. See how you can help at the CA Wilderness Coalitions website:
http://www.calwild.org/campaigns/cwhc.php

We enjoyed a refreshing splash in the Silver Fork on that part of the loop.

 Lake Tahoe Campout 2002

Once again at D.L. Bliss State Park, with its perfect lakeside location, this year's campout provided the usual mix of relaxation and adventure.

   This would be the relaxation...
...and this, one of the adventures...
...a scenic favorite-- the Rubicon Trail along the lakeshore to Emerald Bay.

Men's Hike 'n Splash - North Fork Yuba River

Look refreshing? It was BEYOND refreshing!, but several braved a dip in Cherokee Creek, our lunchstop. AARRRGH!!, complains hike leader Ray (right), who felt obligated to get in since it was his idea.

Along the historic and scenic North Fork of the Yuba River, we found a couple classic swimming holes for a late summer dip. Cherokee Creek Falls is not widely known, and a bit of a bushwack to reach, but what a beautiful spot (above left). Our second swim was on Mammouth Pool, a very large deep hole in the river, with nice rocks and even a rope swing to enjoy (left and below).

Dave goes flying... here comes the splash!

A relaxing day in the sunshine. We'll hate to see the summer end.

Malakoff Diggins State Park - Lesbian Jamboree!

A fun autumn weekend of hikes, cool dips, feasts and fun at the rustic cabins in the ghost town of North Bloomfield.

   Rustic, but not without STYLE!
Serene autumn weather along the Yuba River.

GLS and FrontRunners Sacramento co-host autumn hike

Between the two groups we had a large and enthusiastic turnout.

Hike leaders Brett, Ray & Donna
We hiked along the North Fork American River from Yankee Jim's Bridge, upstream to Indian Creek. The hike seemed to be going along at a surprisingly rapid pace... well, not so surprising since we were hiking with a running group! Frontrunners is a large friendly group of active GLBT folks. Information about their weekly runs/walks can be found at http://www.frsac.org/
Lunch stop along the river where it is met by Indian Creek.

It still feels kinda like summer! We'll enjoy it while we can, anyway.

Enjoying the scenery by the deep swimming holes.

After a vigorous scramble up the slippery banks of Indian Creek, we were treated to a nice waterfall.

Check back here for new pictures, and come join in the fun!
