Birding at Stone Lakes Refuge

Discovering the habitat at Stone Lakes, only a 'stone's throw' from urban expansion.

A special GLS winter birding tour of Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge was well attended .

Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, located west of Elk Grove/Laguna, is a real jewel in the Sacramento area's natural surroundings. More information can be found in the following links:

 Loon Lake snowshoe hike

A sunny day and exhilerating scenery made this a memorable day of exploration and exercise.

 American River Canyon hike

An early spring hike throught the oak woodlands of the Auburn State Recreation Area.

 Cache Creek Natural Area hike

In early spring this proposed wilderness area is a wealth of wildflowers and wildlife.

 Cataract Creek hike

Lunch at Laurel Dell on Mt. Tam

This creek tumbles downhill on the north slope of Mt. Tamalpais. In winter and spring, it is an amazing series of waterfalls.

 Rubicon River hike

A warm early summer day along the Rubicon, in the far reaches of the Georgetown Divide. Not a lot of big crowds here!
Lunch, watching the heavy spring runoff coming down from Hell Hole Reservoir.

Blooming Dogwoods...

   ...and Blue Dicks.

 Lambda Freedom Fair 2003

Always a chance to see old friends, including some four-legged ones, and let the community know we exist.

 Annual GLS Pool Party

Panoramic pool view

A hoot, as always, no one enjoyed this year's party more than Max the Pug! Lots of good food and friendship.
"I'll show these Sierra Clubbers a thing or two!"

 Margaret Lake hike

Summer wouldn't be complete without the short but adventureous hike into lovely Lake Margaret.

On a sweltering day like this, the cool water was pretty inviting...

...or just enjoying the sunshine and scenery

One of nature's oddities along the trail. A glacier-carried boulder, perfectly split.

Lover's Leap & Horsetail Falls hikes

Upper and Lower Lover's Leap, as seen from the second part of the hike (below) up Horsetail Falls.

Looking east to Echo Summit from the top of Lover's Leap

A great lunchtime view of Hwy. 50 snaking up toward the Sierra crest.

The hike up the Horsetail Falls "trail" gets a bit precarious, to say the least. We hiked up as far as this intimate view of the raging falls and spectacular granite.

Round Lake co/hike with Frontrunners Sacramento

Panorama of the volcanic cliffs overlooking Round Lake

Undaunted by rain on the drive up, and sprinkles at the trailhead, and rainclouds draping the hillsides... on they hiked wearing clothes more suited to a hot day. The temps didn't top 60, but it didn't dampen the group's spirits. Ponchos and garbage bags warded off the sprinkles, and no one even thought about taking a dip in the lake.

Round Lake lies in the proposed Meiss Wilderness, south of Lake Tahoe.

 GLS "Solstice Social" potluck party

About 30 enjoyed lots of fun and great food for the holidays. A tacky gift exchange and slideshow added to the festivities.

   Our gracious host
The tacky 'pirate' gift exchange was a hoot.
The surprise gift of the evening is unwrapped to great delight. It was soon 'pirated', of course!

 Snowshoeing near Strawberry, Hwy. 50

Just a couple days after new Xmas snow, 14 GLS hikers, many on snowshoes for the first time, did an easy 5 mile trail through deep fresh snow. Radiant sunshine illuminated the frozen landscape, and views of Lover's Leap and the American River canyon.

Lover's Leap

Smiles all around at our lunch stop, despite a check of the thermometer...30 degrees!

Check back here for new pictures, and come join in the fun!
