GLS Outings Schedule

You, too, can be a GLS outings leader!

Sierra Club Outings are open to the general public, and may be subject to limitations as to group size and meeting the physical demands of the activity. Difficulty of trips are indicated by Grade Ratings (See below for an explanation of Ratings Codes.) Contact the leader in advance of the activity with any questions and to sign up. Sierra Club/GLS encourages voluntary carpooling transportation; however, the outing begins and ends at the trailhead and the club cannot arrange or take any responsibility for the safety of transportation, or guarantee availability of a ride.
See the Guidelines For Enjoying GLS Outings for some tips on what to bring and what to expect.

Nov. 28, Saturday, 9 a.m.

Gray Lodge Bird Watching  (1A1)

This is the opportunity to see thousands, probably millions of white snow geese in their winter habitat.  The geese will have just arrived from the far north and are taking life easy.  There is a short walk out to a viewing platform.  Then we will have lunch.  There is a drive thru the preserve so that we can get closer to the birds.  On the drive it is important to stay in the car.  If you get out of the car, the birds think you are a hunter and thousands of them take off.  Bring lunch and a couple of bottles of water. There is an admission fee for each car.  .

Dec. 19, Saturday

Auburn Calorie Burner Hike  (1A2)

Here's a nearby hike to help us burn off some holiday pies and cookies. From Old Foresthill Bridge at the confluence of the North and Middle Forks American River, we'll climb steadily up the historic (1852) Stagecoach Road almost to the top of the canyon (about 800 ft of elev. gain), on the sunny north slope.  Then traversing and descending the Mossy Rock and Bridgeview trails, we'll be treated to awesome views of the canyon, the high Foresthill Bridge and the distant snowy Sierras.  About 5 miles total, of rutted dirt road and trail, likely muddy in spots, so wear good traction hiking shoes or boots.
