GLS Outings Schedule |
Sierra Club Outings are open to the general public, and may be subject to some limitations as to group size and meeting the physical demands of the activity. Difficulty of trips are indicated by Grade Ratings (See below for an explanation of Ratings Codes.) Contact the leader in advance of the activity with any questions. Sierra Club/GLS encourages voluntary carpooling transportation; however, the outing begins and ends at the trailhead and the club cannot arrange or take any responsibility for the safety of carpools, or guarantee availability of a ride. See the Guidelines For Enjoying GLS Outings for some tips on what to bring and what to expect.

Fairy Falls Poppy Hike (1A2)
Always a popular GLS hike, but if you haven't been to Fairy Falls when the poppies
are in bloom on emerald green hillsides, you've missed a spectacular display.
Of course, the falls ain't bad either! It's about a 5 miles roundtrip hike,
mostly easy walking but with a couple short steep spots, so please wear good
hiking footwear. Spenceville Preserve is located about an hour and half drive
from downtown Sacto, in the remote foothills east of Yuba City. .
March 15, Saturday
Davis Greenbelt Walk (1A1)
Let's meet at 4:00 pm by the north Davis ponds where we'll see lots of geese,

with extra energy. We'll pass soccer fields, playgrounds, wooded areas, and
even public art. You'll have worked up an appetite, so see Davis dining out
below.

to Brunch at a favorite place. Roughly 3 miles total walking.
April 12 & 13, Saturday
- Sunday (1A2 or 2A2)
Pt. Reyes Backpack Overnighter or Day Hike
April is a superb time to visit Pt. Reyes, if the weather cooperates. Wildflowers
abound on warm and sunny days, not like the fog of summertime. GLS has a group
campsite reserved at Coast Camp, which is an easy 2 mile hike from the car.
You'll need backpack gear, food, etc. This date takes advantage of a minus low
tide, so we will hike in, drop the packs and head off on a 3 mile round-trip
hike (optional, but terrific) to explore the amazing sea caves, tunnels and
tidepools of adjacent Sculpture Beach, accessible only at minus tide! This involves
some precarious scrambling and scaling a 10 ft. cliff, hiking boots required.
An option is to participate as a day hike and return to the car on your own,
for a total of about 7 miles hiked. Camping space is limited.
Directions to Pt. Reyes Visitor Center.
April 13, Sunday
Urban Hike and Dinning Out
Brisk 5 mile hike/walk including McKinley Park, and Midtown Area. We will meet
at the tennis courts at 4 pm. After this, eat out at the Sushi Cafe on Alhambra
April 14, Monday - 6:30
GLS Gov Com Meeting
We plan the outings for the next newsletters and deal with other issues of the
group's business. Everyone is welcome.
April 19, Saturday - 10:00 a.m.
Bike Ride along American River
Meet at 10:00 am on east side of Guy West Bridge, opposite CSUS. We'll bike
to Old Town with a possible stop for brunch in Midtown.
April 24, Thursday - 6:30 p.m.
Newsletter Folding - New Location
Come to chat, eat a snack or supper of your choice and help with the mailout
folding and labeling. Meet at Crepe Escape (www.yourcrepeescape.com for menu),
3445 Freeport Blvd, just north of Sac City College.
April 26, Saturday - 9:30 a.m.
Spring Wildflower Walk (1A1)
Because of the gap in time between the newsletter going out and the actual hike
I am not sure of the exact location. If the weather has been warm then we could
go to a higher elevation. The walk will be a couple of miles at most done at
a leisurely pace so that we can see what is blooming.
Apr. 27, Sun. -10 a.m.
Kayak Paddle along American River Parkway
Put-in location to be arranged. (Suitable for inflatable kayaks also). If you've
been taking Bara's Parkway Strolls, let's check out the wildlife from the river's
side this time. Depending on water level, we can go upstream then back - entering
the backwater ponds to see waterfowl, maybe even deer, coyotes, turtles or otters.
You'll need to bring your own boat, snack or lunch, water, possible parking
fee and wear a PFD (flotation vest).
