Hike to Auburn Dam construction site

The Western States Trail below Auburn makes a nice winter hike, though not high enough elevation to be above the clouds on this particular day. We had lunch overlooking the halted Auburn Dam's construction site.

Some restoration work has begun to return the American River to its natural riverbed, and close the diversion tunnel created for the dam's construction. The scarred hillsides will continue to remind us of how close the dam was to being built, before an earthquake fault was discovered beneath it's planned base.

A chance to get out and stretch the legs on a dreary January day.

 Mississippi Bar hike

Located along the north shore of Lake Natoma above Hazel Avenue, and now part of the American River Parkway, this area has a gold minig history going back to 1849. It later was extensively dredged, leaving high rows of river rock tailings piles.

A 100' high 'hill' of tailings provides a nice overview of the area, including Folsom Dam in the distance.

Found treasures?

The Acorn Woodpeckers were plentiful, showing off their bright red caps. A variety of winter waterfowl were also to be seen.

Snack-time along the shore of Lake Natoma.

The equestrian and hiking trails reveal some nice areas of the Parkway that folks on the bike trail whiz past.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park
South Grove Trail Men's Hike

An easy 5 mile hike through the less visited South Grove of Giant Sequoias, on a beautiful Spring day, followed by ice cream in the gold rush town of Murphys.

Lunch beside a fallen giant that spans the stream...

the hollowed shell is tall enough even for hike leader, Ray, to stand inside.

   Blooming Dogwood trees
Group photo at the base of the enormous Aggasiz Tree, one of the 10 largest Sequoiadendron Giganteum

   An extra treat.... Western Azalea
