Trip 6: Italian Bar on the North Fork of the American Wild and Scenic River Canyon, Level 3 Overnighter.

This outing offers a great wilderness camping experience, unique pools, gorges, a gold rush era mine and it's small stamp mill. We hike in on the Mumford Bar Trail 4.5 miles in length and 2700 feet in elevation loss.

Near the bottom of the canyon is an old miner's cabin that has been partially restored and worthy of a quick tour. At the river we eat lunch and inflate our air mattress. The canyon bottom portion is about 2.75 miles in length and there are several good camping spots along the river.
On day two we sleep in and let the water and air temperature climb a little. We complete the gorge scramble to Italian Bar, tour the mining site, eat lunch and deflate the air mattress. Our exit trail is the Italian Bar Trail, 2.3 miles in length and 3000 feet of elevation gain on a steep but well maintained trail.
