This outing utilizes two non-maintained, seldom used, very old miners trails. The Devils Gate and Bogus Thunder mine trails. The trail down is steep, brushy and difficult to follow and is loaded with poison oak. The reward at the bottom of the trail is a huge high walled pool about 30 feet deep and cold.

Down canyon from here the water warms up and we will see the most beautiful and rugged section of this river canyon. It will offer up large, walled pools to play in and carved drops in bedrock to scramble thru. We swim these pools; bring flotation in pack, no air mattress needed. The canyon bottom section ends all too soon at the Bogus Thunder mine.

The trail out is in better condition than the trail in. It has 1400 feet of elevation gain on the hike out. The hiking portion usually ends near the dinner hour and we can make it back to Auburn before the restaurants close. There we celebrate our adventure in the Mother Lode with a meal.
