Each Tuesday and Thursday, January 5 through January 28 (January 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, and 28), the following walk will take place:

Brisk Morning Walk (1A) Davis

Brisk 4-mile loop via Davis greenbelts and bike paths. May include Davis wildlife ponds, UC Davis campus, downtown Davis, Village Homes, or UC Arboretum. Meet 8 a.m. at Peets Coffee in Market Place Shopping Center, corner of Sycamore Lane & West Covell Blvd. (from Hwy.113, exit east on West Covell Blvd.). Not limited to singles. Lunch & Walk (2A) Natomas (Singles)

The city actually put some thought into pedestrian routes in North Natomas.  Bring water, jacket and sun hat and rain gear/umbrella for our 5-mile, brisk stroll.  We can visit the little indigenous plant and pond areas along the way.  Meet 12 noon near what used to be Borders Books.  When this is being written up, it is Crown Books.  By the time we meet, it will probably be a big empty vandalized storefront.  We will look around the parking lot to see what is still in business and eat lunch before our walk.  Bring a container for your leftovers.  Book store spot is in the north part of the shopping center on the NE corner of Truxel/Natomas & Del Paso.  We may wind up walking ½ mile east to another shopping center in search of food.  No reservation needed.  No calls before 9 a.m.  Leader: Barb 916.925.5862.

Day Hike (2A) Marin Headlands Tour (Singles)

We’ll hike around the area of old Fort Baker (now part of the Golden Gate Nat’l Rec. Area and the site of several institutes and the newly remodeled Marine Mammal Center).  We’ll tour the Marine Mammal Center to learn how they rescue and rehabilitate marine mammals and tour the Pt. Bonita Lighthouse (western most point in central Calif.) to learn of its place in Calif. history, and see what other kinds of mischief we can get into.  We’ll hike 7 miles total with ~700’ elev. gain with lunch on the Rodeo Lagoon beach.  Optional dinner afterward.  No reservation needed.  Optional dinner afterward.  Hike rain or shine.  Meet 8 a.m. @ 11th & P St.  Leader: Tony Loftin 916.448.3230 or HikingTony@earthlink.net.

Day Hike (3C) Mount St. Helena (Singles)

Day Hike (1A) American River Bike Trail (Singles)

Ski and Snowshoe, Robb’s Hut   (not a Sierra Club Event)

Join the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol on a tour up to Robb’s Hut and back.  This is a 1,200 foot gain and 6 miles round trip.  This trip is open to the public and is an opportunity to invite family and friends on an EDNSP event.  No dogs. Day Hike (2B) Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (Singles)

Approx. 1,500’ elev. gain and 9 miles.  Challenging  hike.  This hike includes good views (out of the fog) of the Napa Valley, as well as a good workout among the hills of the Coast Range.  Lunch will be only about ¼ way through the hike so, in addition, an afternoon snack is suggested.  Rain cancels.  Not limited to singles.  Meet 8:30 a.m. @ 11th & P St.  Leader: John Meininger 916.967.1018.

Day Hike (2A) Rockville Hills Community Park – Fairfield (Singles)

Day Hike (2B) Redwood Regional Park-Oakland (Singles)

Located in the Oakland Hills, we will hike 8-10 miles in open ridge areas and deep forests, with a total elev. gain of 1,000'.  Meet 8:30 a.m. @ 11th & P St. or in Davis upon request.  We will identify some of the plants and discuss the history of the area.  Rain cancels.  Leader: Alex MacCollom 916.978.9470 (call before 9 p.m.).

 

Ski/Snowshoe (3C) Picketts and Hawkins Peak (Sacramento)

We will start from Hope Valley and head south.  Ski about 11 miles round trip and over 3,000 feet of gain.  Limited to 8.  Bring the 10 essentials and a snow shovel is required. Day Hike (2A) Canyon Creek Trail (Sierra Nevada Group)

This trail follows the North Fork of the Yuba River past Cherokee Creek to Canyon Creek.  Canyon Creek is a feeder creek almost as large as the Yuba.  The hike has 300 feet elevation gain and is 3.5 miles one way.  We will pass through many historic sites and cross a foot bridge across Cherokee Creek.  We will view and discuss the impact of the sites with the natural environs.  Call for meeting location and time.  Carpool to trailhead.  Leader:  Rick Ramos 530-478-1454

 

River Paddle (Class 1) Feather River  (Sacramento Group)

Ski/Snowshoe (2B) Round and Meiss Lake (Sacramento)

About 8 miles and at least 1,500 feet of gain, and it can be strenuous depending on snow conditions. Limited to 8. Bring the essentials, and a snow shovel is required. Day Hike (2A) Sweetwater Trail-Folsom Lake State Recreational Area (Singles)

Hike is 6.8 miles and 400’ elev. gain.  We will generally follow the south shore of Folsom Lake.  Leader keeps a very slow pace.  Meet 10:30 a.m. @ the Folsom Park & Ride at the intersection of Folsom Blvd. and Iron Point Rd. Day Hike (1A) Foresthill Divide Loop  (Seniors)

We’ll hike a smaller loop of the larger Foresthill Divide Loop.  Hike will cross Foresthill Road offering views on both sides of the divide.  Bring snack or lunch, water and essentials.  Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Burger King on Lincoln Way in Auburn at Foresthill exit off I-80.  Rain cancels. Walking Tour (1A) Historic Downtown Petaluma (Singles)

Enjoy Petaluma's Historic Downtown, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, with an extended walking tour.  Buildings and landmarks are briefly described in the comprehensive tour.  Look for the world's only chicken pharmacy and the entire block of turn-of-the century Iron Front Buildings on Western Avenue.  Not limited to singles.  Bring extra $$ for driver and optional dinner after hike.  Rain does not cancel; just bring your umbrella.  Contact leader for meeting info.  Leader: Christine 916.769.5690.

Younger Adult Beginner XC Ski - Loon Lake (Younger Adult Singles)

We will ski on the closed road at Loon Lake in the Crystal Basin Recreation Area off Hwy 50.  Maximum distance of around 10 miles with limited elev. gain.  Must have own skis or rent beforehand.  Low snow conditions may require moving to another location.  Chance of snow cancels.  Trip is advertised for ages 18-40, but all are welcome.  Optional dinner after.  Contact leader for reservation and meeting info.  Leader: Rich Juricich rich.sac@pacbell.net or 916.492.2181.

Day Hike (2B) Auburn Canyon (Confluence) (Singles)

Hike 8 miles with a 1,500’ elev. gain.  While viewing the North Fork of the American River.  We start at “No-Hands” Bridge and will see beautiful views as we hike down to the river.  We will enjoy a lunch along the river for an hour.  A pad to sit on at lunch is a nice addition.  Meet 9:30 a.m. @ Roseville Park & Ride (Atlantic/Eureka Road off I-80) or 10:00 a.m. @ Auburn Courthouse.  Rain Cancels.  Leader: Jack Tolomei 916.944.4942.

Day Hike (2A) American River Canyon (Placer)

Day Hike (1A) Rush Creek Trail - Novato (Singles)

XC Ski/Snowshoe - Red Lake Trailhead (Singles)

Younger Adult Beginning Salsa Class - Harlow’s (Younger Adult Singles)

Day Hike (2B) Cronan Ranch (Sacramento)

Snowshoe Hike (1A)  (Seniors)

We’ll snowshoe either at China Wall, past Foresthill, or somewhere along the I-80 corridor, depending on snow conditions.  Bring $ for Sno Park pass if required at site chosen.  Bring essentials, snowshoes, poles, lunch, water, and dress in layers.  Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Burger King on Lincoln Way in Auburn at Foresthill exit off I-80. Day Hike (2A) Sculptured Beach & Coast Trail (Singles)

XC Ski (2A) Donner Summit (Singles)

Day Hike (2C) Mt. Hood Regional Park, Sonoma (Singles)

We will cross several creeks on the Goodspeed Trail on the way to the top (2,730).  This is an interesting trail because of the variations in terrain and vegetation.  We will identify some of the plants.  The peak overlooks Napa Valley and, on clear days, many distant peaks can be seen.  We will cover 8-10 miles with 2,000' elev. gain.  Must be in good shape and able to stay with the group.  Rains cancels.  Meet 8:30 a.m. @ 11th & P St. or in Davis upon request.  Leader: Alex MacCollom 916.978.9470 (call before 9 p.m.).

Birding  Hike (1A)  Consumnes River Preserve (Seniors)

We’ll walk 2 to 4 level miles through possibly muddy oak woodlands beside the Consumnes River looking for some of the 250 bird species found there.  Bring boots, binoculars or spotting scopes, plus your favorite bird books, snack & water.  Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Natomas Market Place, Truxel Road near I-80 behind the In ‘N’ Out Burger.  Optional lunch after the hike or bring your own to eat on the Info Center veranda.  Co-leaders Rich and Pat Jones (916) 485-3580 or pat.jones1@comcast.net Rain cancels.

Bike Ride (4A) Watt Ave (Singles)

Day Hike (1A) Rockville Hills Regional Park, Fairfield  (Seniors)

Hike about 4 miles with approximately 600-700 feet elevation gain, rocks and uneven footing with some slippery descents.  Wear sturdy boots with good tread, bring hiking poles if you have them, dress in layers.  Bring snack, water, money for lunch at the Valley Cafe (optional) and a change of shoes as the trail can be muddy after rain.  Each hiker must pay a trail use fee of $3.00 using crisp, clean $1.00 bills or a VISA card.  Machine does not give change. Day Hike (2A) Deer Creek Hills (Sacramento)

Full Moon Beach Hike (2A) Abbott’s Lagoon, Pt. Reyes Nat’l Seashore (Singles)

We will take advantage of the late sunset for a wildflower hike along this marsh area out to the beach for a late-night snack and view of the ocean.  We’ll also plan a stop at the Marin Cheese Factory or Bovine Bakery on our way to the trailhead.  ~6 total miles & 500’ elev. gain.  Bring essentials (dress in layers for cold evening marine climate), $$ for driver, and hand light (no headlamps) with fresh batteries.  Rain cancels.  Davis stop on request.  Meet 3 p.m. @ 11th & P St.  Not limited to singles.  Leader: Tony Loftin 916.448.3230 or HikingTony@earthlink.net.

Day Paddle (Class 1) Snodgrass Slough (Paddling)

Snowshoe Hike (2B) U.S. Hwy 80 (Singles)

Snowshoe (1A) Carson Pass (Younger Adult Singles)
