Brisk 4-mile loop via Davis greenbelts and bike paths. May include Davis wildlife ponds, UC Davis campus, downtown Davis, Village Homes, or UC Arboretum. We’ll snowshoe either at China Wall, past Foresthill, or somewhere along the I-80 corridor, depending on snow conditions. Bring $ for Sno Park pass if required at site chosen. Bring essentials, snowshoes, poles, lunch, water, and dress in layers. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at Burger King on Lincoln Way in Auburn at Foresthill exit off I-80. XC Ski (2A) Royal Gorge (Singles)
XC at a brisk pace out to awesome and beautiful Mariah Point or other destination. Intermediate XC skiing skills required. Some advanced trails may be necessary, depending on conditions. Must have own gear or rent beforehand. Forecast of rain or snow may cancel; location may change as local conditions require. Bring layered clothing for changeable conditions, and the essentials. XC Ski Weekend, Yosemite (Younger Adult Singles)
This will be a xc ski weekend at Yosemite Nat’l Park. We will stay in a rental home inside the park. Leader will take group on xc ski day trips. Maximum of 10 miles of skiing each day with less than 1,000’ elev. gain. Cost for two nights lodging will be $100-$200 per person, depending on number of participants. Must pay non refundable deposit by Dec. 31st to confirm participation. Event is aimed at ages 18-40, but all are welcome. Limited to 10. Contact leader for reservation information. Day Hike (2B) Indian Tree Preserve-Novato (Singles)
Hike with us to a grove of Redwood trees on the ridge west of Novato near Lake Stafford. This is a moderate hike of 6.5 miles and 1,200’ elev. gain. Day Hike (2A) Pioneer Express Trail (Singles)
This is a beautiful 8 mile hike along Folsom Lake starting at Horseshoe Bar. The elev. gain is about 300’. This is a sunny hike on a path along the water’s edge. Open Ski/Snowshoe, Telemark Hill (not a Sierra Club event)
Join the El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol on a tour up to Robb’s Hut and back. This is less than a 1,000 foot gain and 6 miles round trip. This trip is open to the public and is an opportunity to invite family and friends on an EDNSP event. No dogs, Chain controls on Hwy 50 cancels. Hike the cliffs above Lake Natoma in the Folsom Recreational Area. Hike is 9.5 miles with 350’ elev. gain. Leader keeps a very slow pace. Day Hike (2A) Benicia Urban & Wetlands (Singles)
8 mile hike at Benicia State Recreation Area, which covers 720 acres of marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait. We’ll have lunch overlooking the Strait. Weather can be changeable, so bring layers. Much of this hike is on pavement. Meet 9 a.m. @ Mace Blvd Park & Ride (east side of Davis). Rain cancels. Bike Ride (4A) Fish Hatchery to Folsom Lake (Sacramento)
Ride up to Beal’s Point at Folsom Lake from the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Ave. and Hwy. 50, along the American River Bike Trail, which is paved. This is a moderately-paced ride of 18-20 miles, with some hills (750' elev. gain). We'll have lunch or snack at Folsom Lake then ride back down the hill. Great views of Lake Natomas and Folsom Lake. There is some optional single-track dirt on the return route. Bring lunch, water, snacks, tire kit, helmet, and fully-prepared bike, etc. Rain cancels. We will start at the Pan Toll parking lot and hike to the top of Mt. Tam. We will stop for lunch at West Point, where the less energetic can wait for the rest to return from the mountain. This hike begins about 9 miles east of Auburn, so the drive is short. The trails wind through the foothills surrounding the institute. Easy-to-moderate hike, 7 miles, 500’ elev. gain. Bring your sweetheart for a walk through this wonderful man-made park with time allotted to visit your choice of the Academy of Sciences (Museum of Natural History, Steinhart Aquarium, & Morrison Planetarium); deYoung Museum; Strybing Arboretum; Japanese Tea Garden; or the Conservatory of Flowers. Day Hike (2A) Redwood Regional Park, Oakland (Seniors)
Hike a leg-stretching 8-mile loop with 500 feet elevation gain through lovely woods in the Oakland hills on the West Trail, Orchard Trail and return by Stream Trail. Some steep descents. Bring lunch, water, sturdy hiking boots and poles, dress in layers. Trail can be muddy in places so bring a change of shoes for ride back. Rain cancels. Day Hike (2B) Bothé Napa & Grist Mill State Parks (Singles)
This is a hike combined with a tour of the Grist Mill Historic Monument. If we're lucky the mill be running and we can try some fresh homemade bread (there is a $3 entrance fee to enter Mill/Museum area). This location should be out of the fog and smog. This beautiful park-like fort has been here since 1776! It is now a park, ready for us to discover and discuss some of its history and explore the newly restored marsh. We’ll look for the U.S. Centennial (1876) and Bicentennial (1976) trees, and the last remaining refugee structures built to house people displaced by the 1906 earthquake. Bike Ride (4A) Fish Hatchery to Folsom Lake (Singles)
Ride up to Beals Point at Folsom Lake, and perhaps beyond, from the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Ave and Hwy. 50. Ride along the American River Bike Trail, which is paved, next to Lake Natoma. Join us for a relatively level, 5 mile hike along the paved Roseville bike path beside Miner’s Ravine Creek. We’ll see some of Roseville’s most beautiful open space and wetland areas. Bring snack and water, money for lunch. To carpool from Sacramento, meet at the Office Depot/Boston Market parking lot on Madison Ave. at Date Ave. (near I-80) at 9:00 a.m. From Roseville I-80, exit Eureka Road and turn right onto Eureka Road, then right on North Sunrise Ave. and right at the signal into Centerpoint Shopping Center/Home Depot. On this hike we’ll explore the oak woodlands and open grassland at Cronan Ranch, near Coloma. Lunch will be along the South Fork of the American River. Hike stats: 7 miles (round trip), elev. gain/loss 1,000', starting elev. 1,000’. Hikers must be in good condition. Full Moon Snowshoe (1A) Hope Valley (Younger Adult Singles)
We’ll meet at Streets of London Pub in Folsom for an optional drink and/or dinner and then head to Hope Valley where we’ll do a moderately strenuous 3-4 mile total distance snowshoe under a romantic full moon! Learn about the natural and human history of the area. Bring snowshoes, optional poles, waterproof jacket/pants/gloves/boots (dress in layers), hat, foam or inflatable pad for sitting on the snow, water, warming drink (Jagermeister!) and $$ for optional carpooling and drink/dinner. From Mountain Home Inn to Stinson Beach, one-way, with a West Marin Stagecoach shuttle, about 7 miles, almost entirely flat or down slope, with an optional flat beach walk at the end (a little over 2 miles) or just relax and enjoy. Easy Day Hike (1A) American River Bluffs (Singles)
We'll hike from the Fish Hatchery at Nimbus Dam across the river and hike up the bluffs, 200' gain, overlooking the American River. Then, we hike down along Lake Natoma and back to the Fish Hatchery for a 6 mile hike. End with tour of Fish Hatchery to see how the salmon decline will impact the American River ecosystem.
