Midweek hikes in the Groveland/Ywy 120 area (Tuolumne Group)

Each Thursday meet at Mary Laveroni Park, Groveland at 8:00 a.m. for an approximate 6 mile hike. Brink a jacket, water, sunscreen and a snack in a daypack. Wear hiking boots. Brokeoff Mountain Day Hike (2C)

Join us to enjoy Lassen Park’s best kept secret, the strenuous and scenic 7-mile trail up to Brokeoff Mountain.  They’ll be plenty of photo opportunities as we cross little creeks, hike along ponds, and pass through meadows full of flowers and climb 2600’ up to a great view of Mt. Lassen.  Thunderstorm cancels. Day Hike (2A) Kortum Trail (North of Bodega Bay) (Singles)

Day Hike (2B) Winnemucca & Round Top Lakes (Singles)

We will hike from the Carson Pass Information Center to Round Top Lake.  8 total miles & 1,800' elev. gain (if time permits we will also do Round Top Peak at 10,380').  The views are spectacular, so bring your camera and swimsuit. Evening Dinner and Walk (1A) North Natomas (Singles)

There is a nice little trail and park going out North at what used to be the end of civilization in Sacramento. Bring water, sun hat, jacket, and flashlight in case we stay out late.  We will do a 5-mile (or so) brisk stroll with a break at the picnic area in the park.  We can look for the quickly diminishing jackrabbit families.  Meet 5:30 p.m. for dinner at La Fiesta Taqueria near the CSAA offices.  It’s in the north (Borders Books) part of the shopping center on the NE corner of Truxel/Natomas and Del Paso Blvd.  Leader: Barb 916.925.5862.

Day Hike (1A) Walk Through History on Donner Summit (Seniors)
Hike will combine great scenery with impact of Donner Summit area on history of California and U.S. See faint pictographs left by early Native Americans, walk along portions of first wagon route to California, trace remains of Dutch Flat – Donner Lake Wagon Road, walk on China Wall, as well as other portions of First Transcontinental Railroad. We will not always be on a trail, so be prepared for uneven, rocky footing as well as initial ascent from Rainbow Bridge area up to Sugar Bowl Access Road. Have lunch, plenty of water (there is no shade) and rain gear in case of showers. Bring strong flashlight for tunnel. Younger Adults Car Camp Plumas-Eureka State Park (Singles)

We’ll pitch our tents at beautiful Plumas Eureka State Park, located in the northern Sierra.  Hiking during the day, partying by the campfire at night.  We’ll be staying at a large, secluded group campsite which features paved walkways to the tent pads, outdoor kitchen with preparation table, sink/faucet and huge BBQ, large fire ring and a private shower and bathroom facility.  $10-$13 per person.  Limit of 30.  Contact leader for reservation and details before August 7th.  For ages 18-40s, but all are welcome.  Leader: Jeff Utberg 916.515.0967 or jeffutberg@hotmail.com.

Urban Hike (2A) San Francisco (Singles)

You just never know where a day in San Francisco will take you.  We may spend time in the Haight, so dress appropriately.  Or, possibly hopping from bakery to restaurant to bakery.  Or, just climbing hellacious hills and enjoying the views (liberal and conservative alike).  I plan to go about 8 miles and we will be walking on concrete, so be prepared for a tough day.  Dress in layers.  Meet 9 a.m. @ 11th & P St.  Not limited to singles.  Bring money for BART, lunch, to reimburse the leader for gas, etc. Leader:  Katherine Sargent KLSargent@frontiernet.net.

Intermediate Extended Backpack (2B) Emigrant Wilderness

Emigrant is an awesome place!!!  118,000 acres situated just north of Yosemite, Emigrant affords generally easy going trekking with abundant wildflowers, numerous lakes with excellent fishing, especially Dorothy, Huckleberry, and Emigrant.  This wilderness has many gorgeous vistas to behold.  Check out the weblink in my profile and look at the all the trip photos/maps I have done into this wonderful wilderness since 1997.

Walk around Sugar Pine Reservoir, enjoying the lake views en route. Plan on a snack break in mid-hike. Clair Tappaan Lodge (CTL) Weekend (Singles)

Join the Sierra Club CTL fundraiser weekend at Donner Summit, at our lovely rustic lodge.  Arrive Friday afternoon, hike Saturday and Sunday morning. Cookie Cook-Off Hike (2B)
 Salmon Lake (Singles)

It’s not necessary to join the hike, but cookie contest participants will please bring about 20 of their favorite home-made cookies, cut in half (40 halves). During lunch we will share the cookies and samplers will vote for their favorite cookie.  A token prize will be given to the winner.  The hike will be moderately strenuous, 7 miles & 1,400’ elev. gain.  The drive will be fairly short, 1.5 hours (one-way).  Optional dinner afterward.  Rain cancels.  Meet 9 a.m. @ Roseville Park & Ride.  Leader: John Meininger 916.723.1916.

Younger Adults Dinner & Full Moon Hike (1A) Sierra Foothills (Singles)

Picnic and Program (Yahi) (Educational)

Join us for a potluck picnic in Westwood Park (Second and Greenwood Streets in Westwood) on Saturday, August 16 at 11AM.  This is a good opportunity to visit with old friends and make new ones.  Bring a dish to share, your own non-alcoholic beverage and table service, as well as comfortable shoes.  Lunch will be at 11:30AM followed by a program by Steve Robinson of Mountain Meadows Conservancy and a car caravan to Round Mountain with a good view of Dyer Mountain, and Indian Ole Dam. Gorge Scramble (Level 3) American Eagle Gorge, N.F. American Wild and Scenic River Canyon

Trip #7 on the webpage at  http://www.motherlode.sierraclub.org/deltaSierra/GSPAGES/gspage0.htm  This outing offers a great wilderness camping experience, unique pools, gorges and a large boulder jumble with car and truck sized boulders.  We also visit several historic mines complete with tunnels and stamp mills. Trail Maintenance (1B) Upper Chambers Creek Trail Maintenance (Yahi) (Conservation)

This will be our second official trail maintenance outing to our newly adopted trail in need of a lot of brush clearing at about 5000 feet in elevation. Day Hike (2A) Estero Trail/Drakes Head Trail – Pt. Reyes Nat’l Seashore (Singles)

Come hike in beautiful Pt. Reyes’ Estero region.  Gentle grasslands and beautiful views of Drake’s Bay.  7 miles & less than 500’ elev. gain. Younger Adult Day Hike (3B) Red Peak Trail to Lake No. 3 in Desolation Wilderness (Singles)

Hike is 12 miles with 1,700' elevation gain. This hike takes us on a gradual climb to infamous Lake No. 3 in the Desolation Wilderness through forest and meadow.  There may be one small stream crossing, depending on flows.  Hike is advertised for ages 18-40s, but everyone is welcome.  Limited to 12. Bike Ride (4A) Fish Hatchery to Folsom Lake (Singles)

Ride up to Beals Point at Folsom Lake, and perhaps beyond, from the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Ave. and Hwy. 50, along the American River Bike Trail, which is paved.  A moderately paced ride of 18 to 20 miles, with some hills, 750' elevation gain.  We'll have an early lunch or snack at Folsom lake, perhaps walk down to the lake, then ride back down the hill.  Great views of Lake Natomas and Folsom Lake.  We may see nesting egrets or herons along Lake Natoma.  Single track "detour" upon request. Day Hike & Swim (2B) Curtain Falls (Yahi)

A strenuous hike to the designated Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Feather River. Three miles of switchbacks and stairs with 1500 feet of elevation loss. Then swim, wade and scramble ½ mile upstream to Curtain Falls. Great scenery and swimming. There is no shade, so bring sunscreen, hat and water, as well as a swimsuit and old tennies or water shoes. Wear boots and bring lunch and snacks in a zip lock bag. Limited to 14 participants. Meet at Chico Park & Ride at 9AM. Call leaders for more info. Return to Chico about 8PM or later. Gorge Scramble (Level 3) Blue Wing, N.F. American Wild and Scenic River Canyon

Trip # 14 on the webpage at  http://www.motherlode.sierraclub.org/deltaSierra/GSPAGES/gspage0.htm.   We drive to the town of Iowa Hill set up a shuttle and hike down the Blue Wing Trail to the bottom of the canyon. Then rock hop and float 4.5 miles to the Stevens Trail. We exit the canyon on the Stevens Trail up 1600' to the town of Iowa Hill. Bring lunch and air mattress. Meet 8am Roseville Square. Urban Hike (2A) The Haight (Singles)

We will drive to BART and ride to San Francisco.  Our 10 miles will be up and down some hills, but noting really steep.  This hike is all on pavement.  You will need CASH for your driver, bridge tolls, BART, lunch, the bakery visit, and possible dinner on the drive home.  Bring a snack in case our lunch is late.  The main goal of this one is to spend 2 hours on your own, in The Haight.  Take a trip back in time, find lunch in a restaurant, shop for CDs, etc.  At about mile 8, we will hit good ol’ Stella’s Bakery in North Beach.  Bring water, layered clothing for San Francisco weather, sun hat, container for leftovers, etc. Rain cancels.  Meet 8 a.m. @ 11th & P St.  Leader: Barb 916.925.5862.

Lake Paddle (Class I) Lake Tahoe (Sacramento)

This is a Class I kayak or canoe paddle at Sand Harbor Nevada State Park heading northwest to Kings Beach.  We can skirt the shoreline.  Must be able to paddle at a moderate pace all day.  Bring food, water, boat, paddles, and life vest.  Fee to enter and launch at the park.  Please do not contact me after 7 p.m. the day before.  No dogs, no inflatable boats.  Leader: Ted Lenzie 916.985.6144 or Clubted@Gmail.com.

Stroll (1A)South Natomas Area (Seniors)
Let’s finish off the summer with an urban stroll and lunch in the South Natomas area. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the South Natomas Community Center parking lot, 2921 Truxel Road (between San Juan and West El Camino) for a stroll through this area originally settled by the Portuguese, as many street names reflect. Day Hike (2A) Cluster Lakes (Yahi)

Enjoy lakes, meadows and beautiful vistas in Lassen National Park during this mostly level 10-mile loop hike. Bring lunch, water, carpool $$ and dress in layers. Meet at Chico Park & Ride at 8AM or at the Burger King/Applebee’s parking lot in Red Bluff at 9AM. Leader: Bill, 527-8203.


Day Hike (2B) Island Lake (Desolation Wilderness) (Singles)

 This is a moderately strenuous hike on a high alpine trail from Wrights Lake,  past Lower Twin Lake and Boomerang Lake, up to Island Lake.   About 8 miles and 1,400' elevation gain.  With good weather, the lakes can be suitable for swimming.  Hikers must be in good to excellent condition.  Elevation 8,150' at Island Lake.  Bring the essentials, including 3 or 4 quarts water, snacks, lunch, swimming attire, as well as layered clothing due to changeable weather conditions, and $$ for carpool drivers and optional dinner in Placerville.  Hike limited to 12.  Rain cancels.  Contact leader for details and reservation before 8/28.
